l'art Noir New Orleans has a new home at 4108 St. Claude Avenue. l'art Noir anticipated reopening in October 2005, but due to 3 feet of flooding from Hurricane Katrina the grand reopening was postponed until November 11, 2006.

The original l'art Noir gallery held its debut exhibition on Friday February the 13th, 1998, in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Created by artist Jeffrey Holmes (aka Master Jeffrey) as an alternative art space, l'art Noir quickly became Fort Lauderdale's premier showcase for lowbrow and underground art. After four successful years in Fort Lauderdale, Master Jeffrey succumbed to his love of New Orleans and relocated the gallery to 906 Mazant Street in New Orleans. In April of 2005, Jeffrey and Andrea purchased a home on St. Claude Avenue in New Orleans, where l'art Noir now has a permanent home.

l'art Noir New Orleans is dedicated to bringing you the best underground/lowbrow art to be found in New Orleans, around the country and beyond.

"l'art noir" (dark art) is not a new concept. Throughout history, people have been fascinated with life's darker sides, subjects which include religion, oppression, war, birth, death, fear, pain, sex, and love.

Dark art is not limited to the visual arts. Writers and musicians through the ages have also been drawn to these themes. Rembrandt, Picasso, Van Gogh, Rubens, Kahlo, Munch, Miro, Blake, Man Ray, Bosch, da Vinci, Dali... Nietzche, Burroughs, Milton, Kafka, Shakespeare... Beethoven, Wagner... just a few who have created dark art.

Dark art comes in many forms. It can be social commentary as well as personal insight. Dark art can have a sense of humor. It can be soft and haunting or powerful and controversial. l'art Noir explores dark art from every perspective.
