"l'art
noir" (dark art) is
not a new concept. Throughout history, people
have been fascinated with life's darker sides,
subjects which include religion, oppression,
war, birth, death, fear, pain, sex, and love.
Dark
art is not limited to the visual arts. Writers and
musicians through the ages have also been drawn to
these themes. Rembrandt, Picasso, Van Gogh, Rubens,
Kahlo, Munch, Miro, Blake, Man Ray, Bosch, da Vinci,
Dali... Nietzche, Burroughs, Milton, Kafka, Shakespeare...
Beethoven, Wagner... just a few who have created
dark art.
Dark
art comes in many forms. It can be social commentary
as well as personal insight. Dark art can have a
sense of humor. It can be soft and haunting or powerful
and controversial. l'art Noir explores dark art from
every perspective. |
